This was the 3rd year in a row that we've taken part in this game jam, but the first time that we've won it! However, the theme "Plan, Execute, Optimise" didn't inspire us much. We also had optional constraints: "Original card game" and "Cheat to win".
This event is special for our little group, because it's a chance to be creative, to try new things, to challenge ourselves and to discover that we're capable of great things in a short weekend.
Each time, we take some time beforehand to share what we want to try. In our team, each person has a more or less important relationship with God in their life. So I shared that my personal challenge was to experience what it might be like to create a game with God...
At the start of the Jam, as usual, we brainstormed. This time, it was hard to get going in any particular direction. It was not until quite late in the evening that we took the time to see what the Bible had to say about this theme, and we were drawn to Luke 14:28-30. From that moment on, inspiration struck and we quickly came up with an interesting concept!
Aside from this aspect, I must admit that I experienced this Jam differently from the other times. First of all, I didn't have the critical role of the developer in charge of the game loop, it was Florian who had that and he nailed it. I've got a fairly light load, having the freedom to create the 3D graphic style on Unity. But what really stood out for me was that we had to stick together like never before, depending on each other's needs: I won't forget those 2 hours of suffering spent late on a Saturday evening repairing the Blender export of the tower on which my brother had given up, knowing how much work he still had to do. But what I'll remember most of all are my moments of critical workload (integrating assets and finalising them prior to delivery) when I heard my peers praying even though my mental workload prevented me from doing so.
Thank you, Lord, for this experience 😁
Despite our respective schedules and commitments, we want to take this game further than the previous ones. We're putting into practice a new operating schedule to move forward without burning out, and without coming to a standstill. We're updating the general AD, reviewing the user experience, supporting several target platforms, adding extra interaction, etc.
