This game was a submission to the February 2022 LvlUp game jam; an annual event organized by the University of Engineering and Architecture in Fribourg, Switzerland. This year, the theme was "Dome" and the constraints were "boids" and "mouth noises". We decided to meet all the constraints, but we could not make a fully functional game at the end of the competition. Several corrections and improvements were made to the game in the following weeks, and the final is available below!
During this event, 13 games were produced in 45 hours by around 50 participants, and 4 prizes were awarded. My team, baptized Mosquito Gang, nevertheless won the public prize, that is to say the most appreciated game by the other participants. Great games have been produced during this jam and you can check this here.
The project was done remotely: if the game jam took place in Switzerland, my university pair Florian and I coded from Strasbourg, while my friends in Switzerland were either on the spot or at home. A composer also joined us the same day. In the end, I was with:
In the design of the game, everyone participated and played a decisive role in the emergence of the story, theme and gameplay. Thanks to my previous experiences, I was able to lead the brainstorming and suggest workshops that brought out the ideas.
In the execution, we were only 2 developers for 3 artists. For this project, I didn't have to search for graphics nor sounds because it was managed by the rest of the team. If Florian took care of the artificial intelligence ("boids") and the menus, I took care of... everything else. This includes: core gameplay, camera, obstacles, life cycle, graphics integration, animation creation, sound remixes and deployment. We only reworked the game flow afterwards...
